Faith at Sea
11th June, 2009 - Posted by Neil Harrigan -
In preparation for our pilgrimage in the footsteps of St Paul, Mary and I decided to visit Berlin by sea and by train. Paul of course was a great seafarer. The chaplain on our ship was an American and as we got to know him through daily Mass and having him join us over dinner on a couple of nights, we became aware of the complexities of seafaring, eg many of the ship’s staff were Catholic Filipinos a long way from their homes and away for months while they tried to provide for their families. After a long day of looking after the passengers, Father celebrated Mass for them commencing at 11PM. Our experience of Berlin can wait for another time, and another post. But this experience here of seafarers is timely as Bishop Mark reminds us of the annual appeal for the Mission to seafarers.
