Reflections from the back of the bus - or, the boat
21st June, 2009 - Posted by Ursula Stephens -
Friday
This morning we are packed and ready to embark on our boat trip - not a cruise, we’re told- because ours is a trip with purpose.
Our ship is very comfortable - we have three nights on board and the opportunity for talks, prayer, mass and conversations all sprinkled among the cultural expose that is this Aegean paradise.
We begin with a short bus ride to the port of Priaus, where we have to surrender our passports and are provided with an identity card!
Then, aboard and settled we meet for Mass. We are joined by a few other passengers who share in our reflection of the readings.
Yiannis is back with us - he arranges our trip to Mykonos - a haven of blue and whitewash, resplendent with tourist shops, tavernas and hotels.
Yiannis points us to a taverna for dinner, and John and Maureen join us for a scrumptuous Greek meal as we watch the sun set over the water - this is paradise.
We are discovering the joy of queues. Today Archbishop Mark reminded us of the messiness of life and how order may not always bring meaning …little did we realise how literally that would play out today!
We had to wait for shuttle buses to take us back to the portn where tenders would take us back to our boat. It was crazy - everyone was tired, crotchety and frustrated - there seemed little order in the chaos, but somehow, miraculously, we were all bustled onto buses in a mad rush, and met the last tenders heading back on board!
What this boat trip provides is a little personal space.
Lord I open my heart to you right now. Take over my life and make me into the person you want me to be. Help me to see you and your love in the messiness that is my life!
We are all well this evening - the sea air is obviously good for us all. Bishop Francis is rested. Ted is striding out, Elizabeth is amazing us all,Pieter and Sheila are adept at pacing themselves, Donna is in good spirits. Stephen has been demonstrating his knowledge of the classics.
Tomorrow is a big day!
