Actions in the Footsteps of Saint Paul
24th June, 2009 - Posted by Sister Barbara -
By now the pilgrims have prayed in Mary’s House at Ephesus and reflected on the mystery of her son, the Son of God and rejoiced in her title, Theotokos, given her by the Council of Ephesus as long ago as 431. They have prayed in some of the great monasteries of the early church, monasteries in which the great Jewish prayers, the Psalms became enshrined in the church’s liturgy, the Prayer of the Hours. Our pilgrims, too, have silently stood within one of the ancient centres for the devotion of the icon, a devotion to which we of the west are increasingly being attracted.
Our prayer and action
Let us, in our prayer these next few days of our virtual pilgrimage, turn to the Book of the Psalms, found in the Hebrew Scriptures (the Old Testament). If you are already familiar with the psalms choose one or two you love. If you are unfamiliar with them you might like to begin with Psalm 239 (138 in the Jerusalem bible) or psalm 6. I suggest you pray your psalm reflectively, pausing to let the words and their meaning speak to your heart. Don’t worry if you don’t read the whole of the psalm; remember one word prayed slowly is better than a dozen just raced through! As an action you might like to search out some more knowledge of the icon. Or, introduce someone else to the psalm you have been praying each day. Happy pilgrimaging!
